SPORTECH BIMINI TOPS 1. What are the benefits of a bimini top? The prime benefit of a bimini is the protection it provides from the ultra violet rays of the sun. Over the past several years sailors have become more and more aware of the dangers of prolonged sun exposure and bimini tops have become a necessary sailing accessory. The Sunbrella fabric we use was originally engineered for the residential awning industry. Test data provides that even in dark colours this fabric will cut out up to 50% of the sun heat. Furthermore, this fabric successfully cuts out 100% of the suns damaging rays.
2. Can a bimini be designed to extend aft of my backstay? Yes! In fact we find that with most modern cockpit designs the bimini has to extend aft of the backstay to properly cover the helm area. By using slits with two zippers through which the single or split backstay pass we are able to achieve shading all the way aft. 3. What are the height restrictions? Bimini height is most often governed by boom clearance. Ideally 63 above the cockpit floor is the height we try to achieve, this of course is not accomplished on boats with extremely low booms. Keep in mind that each bimini is custom designed and there is normally a fair amount of latitude regarding height.
4. Can my bimini fold down when not needed? Yes! There are several ways in which a bimini will fold. Usually the unit folds aft and lays just between the rear coaming and backstay. In some rare instances it is suitable to fold the bimini forward onto the coach roof. On some boats with very narrow transoms it is necessary to strut the aft frame and fold the forward frames aft, thus storing in the upright position. 5. Can I remove the bimini for racing? Yes! The mounting hardware on a bimini is minimal. By loosening one bolt at each mount bracket the bimini can be removed completely. 6. Is the Sportech bimini guaranteed? Absolutely! Our biminis are guaranteed to fit and work properly. The stainless framework is guaranteed against corrosion in fresh or salt water or breakage for five years. The Sunbrella fabric is also covered for five years against fading, shrinkage and mildew.
There are numerous options which can be added to a Sportech bimini. Your bimini can be joined to your dodger by way of a windowed connector panel. Side and rear curtains can be zipped on to create a complete cockpit enclosure. The possibilities are endless and any of our representatives would be pleased to discuss your particular requirements and provide you with price information. 8. What is the maximum wind speed a bimini can be used in? We have had numerous reports from our customers of bimini tops being in use winds upwards of thirty five knots +. Virgin Islands charter fleets have dozens of our bimini tops in constant use in breezes which seldom drop below twenty knots. |
